From Roots, We Rise: The Seeds We Carry Forward

Updated: 11 hours ago

There are places that seem to hold memory in the very ground beneath them, where the earth feels layered with more than fallen leaves and seasons. A grove of old trees can carry this feeling especially strongly, their roots threading through soil that has held countless footsteps before our own.

In one such grove, a woman stands beneath an ancient tree.

She places her hand against the bark and feels the warmth of the sun stored there. Above her, branches open toward the sky, while beneath her feet, roots travel through dark soil farther than she could ever follow.

For a moment, she senses herself inside that same pattern of belonging and becoming. As she imagines those roots beneath the earth, branching and crossing in places she cannot see, she begins to think about all that has reached her in much the same way. Ways of knowing, choosing, creating and loving that began long before her own life.

Her thoughts turn toward the women who came before. Some live vividly in photographs and family stories. Others have softened into fragments: a familiar gesture, an instinct no one remembers learning, a way of bringing beauty into ordinary life. Their names may have faded, yet the imprint of how they lived continues.

She begins to imagine these women as seeds placed into the soil of time. A choice made in one lifetime can widen what becomes possible in another. One woman follows an inner knowing and changes the direction of her life; generations later, someone else finds herself standing on ground that feels more spacious because of it.

This woman understands that so much of what she experiences as freedom has roots. The life she can imagine has been nourished by devotion, creativity, courage and countless acts of self-trust. Someone reached before she did, and the horizon shifted.

She looks up.

Something in her wants to climb.

Her palms meet the rough bark as she lifts herself onto the first branch. The movement feels familiar, instinctive. With each step upward, more of the landscape comes into view: first the grove, then a meadow beyond it, and finally a river curving through the distance.

The world grows larger as she rises, and she begins to understand that each generation is offered a different view from the one before. What once sat beyond the visible horizon may now lie within reach.

She pauses on a broad branch and glances toward the earth. The roots have disappeared from sight, yet she feels their presence clearly. Everything above has been made possible by what grows deep below the surface. Her lineage offers strong ground and room to expand.

So, she continues.

Sunlight brightens near the upper canopy. Leaves brush her arms, and cooler air moves across her skin. Eventually, she reaches a wide limb where the tree opens toward the horizon.

Fields stretch into the distance. Mountains gather faintly beyond them, while roads disappear over hills into places she has never seen.

Possibility feels immense from this height. She senses how much life is still waiting to unfold through her: creations whose shapes have yet to emerge, experiences that will deepen her, and places she may one day stand that remain beyond the edges of her imagination.

Along the branch beside her, tiny green buds have begun to form. She touches one with the pad of her finger and wonders what this tree will look like many seasons from now, what will grow here after she has gone. And with that thought come the women who will follow her. Some may know her intimately; others may simply encounter the traces of choices made in her lifetime. A path she helps widen may feel natural beneath another woman's feet. What she creates might become the spark that helps someone recognize her own possibility.

The woman rests her hand against the branch, and something becomes clear to her.

Her life will enter the soil, too.

What she chooses to nurture, the gifts she allows to take form, and the ways she honours her own becoming will become part of what exists for those who follow.

The wind moves through the canopy, carrying the sound of thousands of leaves. She closes her eyes and feels the tree sway beneath her, rooted deeply while its branches continue reaching toward the light.

A single, tiny seed became this tree. In its own time, the tree will release seeds of its own, carried toward places it will never visit.

She turns once more toward the horizon, where the fading light has begun to gild the edges of the distant hills.

For a moment, she can feel the whole story at once: roots threading through ancient earth, the strength of the trunk beneath her hand, young buds gathering themselves along the branches. She belongs within this great continuum of becoming. What was planted long before her has helped her reach this height. And somewhere beyond what she will ever witness, something she plants will continue to grow.

Lineage moves through us in wondrous ways we may never fully trace. We inherit seeds whose origins we may never fully know, tend them with our own hands, and offer their fruit to a future still dreaming itself into being.

The woman looks out across the vast horizon and feels how much possibility remains.

There are branches still reaching, seeds still travelling, whole forests waiting inside beginnings too small to see, and somewhere within her own life, the next one has already begun.

From these roots, we rise.

A Closer Look at the Symbolic Landscape

The hanging seeds

At the very bottom of the image, seeds hang like delicate wind chimes, suspended between soil and promise. They speak to beginnings held across generations: small inheritances of courage, imagination and potential, each containing far more than can be seen from the outside.

The roots

Golden roots weave through the trees, illuminating the hidden network beneath the landscape. They evoke the wisdom and strength gathered across generations, threading the lives of women past and present into a living continuum that still shapes what is possible now.

The women

Above the canopy, silhouettes of women make their way through the branches, each at a different place in their journey. As they climb, the view widens around them, revealing paths and horizons made more expansive by those who came before.

The moth

At the centre of the roots, a golden moth glows like a small ember tucked into the darkness below. It speaks to transformation, instinct and the mysterious pull toward light, resting at the heart of the root system as a tiny symbol of change already stirring within the lineage.
